SIR KENNETH MACMILLAN’S ROMEO AND JULIET PERFORMED AT THE ROYAL OPERA HOUSE COVENT GARDEN – 60th Anniversary
Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet performed by the Royal Ballet is celebrating its 60th Year Anniversary and its 537th performance at the Royal Opera House with Nicholas Georgiadis’ designs from the 4th of March 2025 to the 26th May 2025. Look out for the upcoming screening of Romeo and Juliet in cinemas from the 21st of March 2025.
The revival has attracted a lot of critical acclaim. Please read some of the newspaper article clips below:
“Romeo and Juliet at the Royal Ballet review: this glorious old ballet refuses to act its age. The Royal Ballet inhabits their heritage production like a well-loved home. This ballet is old enough to nab a Freedom Pass, but refuses to act its age. Kenneth Macmillan’s Romeo and Juliet premiered in 1965, but 60 years on the wrenching tragedy, stippled with detail, remains a living glory of the repertoire. Spinning Shakespeare’s textured storytelling into ballet is a high-wire act- no one has done it better than MacMillan as he creates a world of star-crossed lovers. From its first piercing melody and honeyed scurry, Prokofiev’s score propels the drama, while Nicholas Georgiadis’ designs, in ruby, plum and terracotta, move from bustling city square to chilly mausoleum, overseen by sombre stone angels. The Royal Ballet inhabits their heritage ballet like a well-loved home- every detail tells a story…”, extract by David Jays, 5th March 2025, The Evening Standard.
“With its 537th performance by the Royal Ballet, Kenneth Macmillan’s sumptuous Romeo and Juliet is back for its 60th anniversary season. Not much has changed since its premiere in 1965, with a 45 year old Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nuereyev, nearly 20 years her junior, as the star cross’d lovers. Nicholas Georgiadis’s imposing designs, slightly revised in the 2000s, still move the action swiftly from a dusty Veronese square to the bedroom to the tomb- the costumes in dusty oranges, yellows, plum reds providing grandeur and vivid life. And the Royal Ballet company still absolutely understands the work’s heady mix of impassioned naturalism and soaring classicism. Each detail is considered and performed with infinite care to Prokofiev’s racing score.” extract by Sarah Crompton, 9th March 2025, The Observer.
“Kenneth Macmillan’s celebrated Romeo and Juliet celebrates its 60th anniversary with a return to the Royal Ballet in spring. Based on Shakespeare’s great love story, Macmillan’s electrifying adaptation is regarded as a masterpiece of the Royal Ballet repertory. Created originally on dancers Christopher Gable and Lynn Seymour, the ballet premiered in 1965 with Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn in the lead roles, receiving 43 curtain calls and propelling the partnership to legendary heights…. Nicholas Georgiadis sumptuous designs perfectly evoke Renaissance-era Verona, from the bustling Italian marketplace of the ballet’s opening scenes and high-octane sword fights, to the decadent masked ball where the star-crossed lovers first meet…. This most romantic of all ballets will relay live to cinemas on Thursday 20 March with principal dancers Fumi Kaneko and Vadim Muntagirov dancing the lead roles. Encore screenings begin from Sunday 23 March.” by London Post, February 6th, 2025.
